How does pretty in pink end

To hear director Howard Deutch tell it, the people rose up during the first test screening, boo-ing the film's original ending — a never-released version that saw Andie Molly Ringwald end up happily with her fellow other-side-of-the-tracks comrade, the utterly devoted Duckie Jon Cryer.

It left entitled, rich hottie Blane Andrew McCarthy out in the cold after he ghosted his pledged prom date have you no shame, sir?

And we got to the ending, and they started to boo," says Deutch, who insists there were actual boos. The girls were like, 'Forget the politics. We want her to get the cute boy. That visceral reaction left screenwriter and producer Hughes who died in , and the first-time director, squirming in their theater seats. They huddled to remake the ending, with Hughes writing a new five-page conclusion that grows more surprising with each passing year — having Andie choose uber-privileged Blane over working-class Duckie.

It goes against every underdog-love-prevails rule and the whole movie had built toward Andie and Duckie ending up together. One headache in particular sticks out. He used to ask more and more if I had anything.

So, early on, we talked about stuff, and he would do passes on the script immediately. But I trusted his gut more than mine. The script was very close to what you see, except for the ending.

He loved the idea of a repertory group. John knew who he was writing for, and that was a big difference for him. When he knew who he was writing for, it made all the difference to him. I always liked when Jon Cryer dances. In the script, it was left fairly general as he just came into the place and a record was playing. I thought the choice to use no music in the Duckie-Steff fight was incredibly effective. Was that the reasoning behind this choice? You could feel his pain, and I certainly related and got pulled into the undertow of that moment.

And I think most people did. Was it mostly natural lighting at dusk, or did you set up some lights to enhance it? It left us little time to get the shot — 20 or 30 minutes tops. Was that line circled from the start as the pivotal moment of the piece? Not only did we not… I think John may have, but when I did the first cut of the movie, we were a little bit long, so I cut out that scene right before Andie goes to the prom. Is it too long? Is it boring? Is it working? Is it cooking?

And the audience booed. And so we all had a heart attack, and had to reshoot. And John figured out how to change it so that Andrew came alone to the prom, and then Duckie sacrificed his love, and Molly and Andrew could be together. Who can forget this classic 80s moment? You want to see that alternate ending? The one that audiences booed, giving John Hughes and Howard Deutch a heart attack? We asked the director if it was going to be part of the new Blu-ray release that Paramount has on shelves as of June 16, but he said:.

I don't know. Paramount confirms that the alternate ending for Pretty in Pink is available on Blu-ray, and you can purchase that starting today. Click here to order Pretty in Pink through Amazon.
