She died of heart failure three years after Berry disappeared. Like, she was always fighting. How do I feel about that? And that was because of Jocelyn. Though she was locked in with the three of them whenever Castro left the house, Jocelyn occasionally was allowed to go outside in the backyard, to the park or to Sunday services with her father. Would he ever think about touching her because, you know, he had his problems?

For the first time in 10 years, Berry said she found her bedroom door unlocked without Castro around. Downstairs, the front door was open but wired with an alarm. The teen was also featured on the national television program America's Most Wanted for three consecutive years — in , and Over the next nine years, DeJesus would be held, alternatively with ropes and chains, with two other young women, Knight and Berry who eventually would give birth to a daughter in captivity. Castro reportedly covered DeJesus's head with a bag when he raped her because he knew her family well and because she was a friend of his daughter's.

Another ironic event came in , when Castro's estranged son, Anthony, then a journalism student, wrote about DeJesus's disappearance and its impact on the community in an article that was published in a Cleveland-area community newspaper.
